How do you choose an elementary school?

Choosing a school is a significant decision for many families. Beyond location and school hours, it is worth thinking about the educational approach, social life, the spaces and the people who will accompany the children.

Questions worth asking on a school visit

  • What does a typical day in first grade look like?
  • How are children supported at the start of the year?
  • How are differences between children approached?
  • In what ways do children learn beyond lessons in the classroom?
  • What opportunities do children have to initiate and to have an influence?
  • How is the relationship between the family and the educational team built?
  • What place does the parent community have?
  • How is the school connected to the neighbourhood and its surroundings?

What really matters over time

When choosing a school it is easy to focus on what can be measured: hours, clubs, results. But most of what a child takes from elementary school is precisely what is hard to measure. Whether they felt they belonged, whether there was one adult who saw them, and whether it was allowed to make mistakes.

It is worth asking yourselves what you want your child to feel in six years, and not only what they will learn in the first year. The answer to that question usually matters more than comparing curricula.

What is worth looking at during the visit itself

Some of the answers are not in the presentation but in the corridor. It is worth noticing how adults speak with children when no one is presenting, what the shared spaces look like, and what hangs on the walls: children’s work or printed material.

There is no single school that suits every family. A visit, a conversation with the staff and getting a feel for the atmosphere can help parents understand where their child will be able to feel they belong, to grow and to learn.

Alongside your own impressions, it is worth checking the current registration zones and procedures of the Jerusalem Municipality, which affect what registration options are actually available.
